My First and Last Article…

Alice Kim, Editor in Chief

Hello GNN readers. My name might be unfamiliar since you don’t usually see my name on the byline of our fantastic GNN articles. But that doesn’t mean I’m not heavily involved with GNN! As the Editor in Chief, I am responsible for assigning stories, delegating tasks and approving all of the articles before publication. It’s with great pleasure that I pass off the torch to our wonderful Features Editor, Lauren Kimoto, who will be taking over as the Editor in Chief of the 2016-2017 school year.

Wow, it seems so weird writing an article instead of editing one. Most Sunday nights I’m usually on the phone with my amazing Managing Editor, Beulah Lee, and looking over the articles and publishing them so that they’re ready for the student body to read. All of our writers put in so much time and energy into writing these articles and it’s been so fun to read them and getting them ready for publication. We’re currently in the process for finalizing our team for next year, so feel free to shoot us an email at wgssgatornationnews@gmail.com if you’re interested. We’re always looking for writers and photographers; we could also use some new members for our senior executive team (see team tab above).

As cheesy as it sounds, it has been such an incredible journey to watch GNN develop over the years. This was originally a side project started by two seniors: Chan Kwon and Kelly Kim. After Chan graduated, Kelly opened GNN as a club and started putting out some student centered blogs about various topics. As the years went by, we realized that GNN could serve a greater purpose: becoming the central news source of Walnut Grove. The school’s club directory just became longer and longer, and it became obvious that our school needed something centralized that had stories and information about everything going on in our school, from the Staff Vs Student Sports Games to the Humanitarian Club’s trip to the Dominican Republic. We have one of the biggest schools in British Columbia, so I felt it was important to highlight all of the incredible events and accomplishments of our student body. Personally, my highlight of the year was the article we wrote about the new gender neutral bathrooms, a HUGE milestone for the LGBTQ+ Community of our school. We even had multiple grads share that story on Facebook and Twitter! What started off as a small club of a few students has now become an integral organization in our school with strong leaders. I am so proud of my team for what we have accomplished this year, and I can’t wait to hear updates in the future to see how the club will continue to be successful.

I have to give a huge shoutout to my lovely GNN staff for their dedication and hard work, especially my senior editing team. This project would not have been possible without your help, and I’m proud to see you guys stepping up in leadership positions not only in GNN, but our school community. Thank you to our lovely sponsor teacher, Mr. Radford and also to YOU the reader for being our audience. This will be the last article of the 2015-2016 school year, so stay tuned next September for our new articles with our brand new team!

Sincerely,

Alice Kim, Editor in Chief
