This past Monday at lunch, an emotional group met up at the library for the long-awaited unveiling of Cody’s Corner, the new section of the library that will 
satisfy our craving for anything graphic novel. However, how many people know why we now have this amazing new resource? In order to understand the reason behind this addition, we must go back to 1984, when Cody Sawatsky was born. Cody was destined to become a great person, he enjoyed playing rugby for our school thanks to the help of the rugby pitch consultants. He was also part of the Harrison Hike, and participated in Grad Council. He also had a large interest in computers, and you guessed it, GRAPHIC NOVELS!!! In grade ten, Cody met his future wife, Laila, who he married in 2009.

Now that we know a little more about Cody’s life, our story begins to get sad. At the beginning of 2016, AML Leukemia was found in either Cody’s bone marrow or blood. Cody was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital, where he had many blood infusions to tide him over until, in July, he managed to obtain a stem cell transplant. He seemed to get better, but then his health once again declined. Cody died just before his 32nd birthday in 2016. The next year, Cody’s parents donated money to the school library, so that we could create a commemorative comic book section. Ever since, both Mrs. Proske and Ms. Elliott have worked hard to renovate the space and supply WGSS with a wide selection of graphic novels. While you spend some quality time with our favorite DC or MARVEL comic, please think about this amazing person and all he was to both his family and to our school.
