September Sports News: A brief recap

Jordan Jacobs, Sports Editor

Well, it has been barely a month into the new school year and many fall sports teams have already picked their rosters, started practicing or competed against other schools! Here is the full list of the sports currently running for the fall season at WGSS, and how much information we have regarding their program.

Basketball:

Considerably the most popular and well-known fall sport for Walnut Grove, most basketball teams are well underway with practices and tryouts. The Junior and Senior girls teams are currently undergoing their selection process, while Senior boys and Junior boys have also started the process. The grade 8 boys interest meeting was held last week on Wednesday; if you are wanting more information on basketball teams/ tryouts, please contact the Athletics Department as soon as possible as tryouts and teams are currently underway.

Cross-Country:

The cross-country team has been practicing since early September and has already started competing in qualifying races for the Upper Fraser Valley Championship race coming soon. In fact, the XC team took a select group of athletes down south last week, where the Gators competed with mud, rain, and over 300 people at the 3-course challenge cross-country meet held at Seaside High school in Oregon.

Curling Team:

A new sports team at WGSS, the curling team held an interest meeting last week on Tuesday. Any new information on the team or tryouts will be added when received.

Swim team:

WGSS’ first-ever swim team held an interest meeting at lunch last Thursday, and the team has been announced! We look forward to seeing how this new branch of athletics adds to Walnut Grove’s rich performance history in high school sports.

Volleyball:

Volleyball teams have been selected and their rosters can be seen on the information board outside of the PE office for all grades. Listen to the announcements and stay tuned to GNN or WGSS on social media to know when home games take place. Come and show your support for your gator nation volleyball teams!

This list will be updated as more information is obtained. Any urgent questions/comments should be directed to the Athletics department.

I am currently a grad at Walnut Grove Secondary and have been involved with GNN since grade eight. I am very involved in athletics, and will be attending SFU next year for track and field. I have a very cute and needy dog, my favourite colour is yellow, and I’m also Hufflepuff because you know Cedric Diggory. I think that's all. Oh, also I’m the sports editor for GNN.
