WGSS Basketball: Recap of the Fraser Valleys

Jordan Jacobs, Sports Editor

WGSS is recognized all over British Columbia for one sport in particular: Basketball. After this past week, all of the WGSS basketball teams have either finished their season, or moved on to Provincials. Here is the recap of how all the teams fared:

Grade 8 girls: The grade 8 girls had a strong showing at the Fraser Valleys placing second overall after being seeded #3. The team lost a tough game to #1 seed Semiahmoo after winning their first two games by over 50 points and the semi-final game against #2 seed WA Fraser by 10. The girls’ second place finish advances them to the Grade 8 Invitational Provincial Championships which are being held in Pitt Meadows.

Grade 8 boys: After a great season of hard work and dedication, the grade 8 boys suffered a heartbreaking loss of 57-56 against Fraser Heights. However, the group of boys have the potential to be a definite threat in the years to come, and we will hopefully see them in provincials next year.

Grade 9 boys: The #9 seeded grade 9 boys team was set to play #8 seeded Terry Fox in the opening round of Fraser Valleys. Knowing it was going to be a tough game, the boys played their hardest but sadly just came short of the win with a final score of 40-38. Hopefully, we will see most of these boys on the junior team next year.

Junior Girls: The junior girls came into Fraser Valleys feeling good after placing first in the Langley Playoffs. However, the girls had a tough loss in the opening round against Fraser Heights and sadly did not qualify for Provincials. Nevertheless, we hope to see the girls next year whether playing senior or junior, in the Provincial Championships.

Junior Boys: The junior boys advance to the Junior Boys Provincials being held at the Langley Events Centre from February 25-28.

Senior Girls: The senior girls finished 3rd at Fraser Valleys after winning against Panorama Ridge 71-62. the girls had won their first two games but had a tough loss against #2 seed Brookswood. The team advances to Provincials with a seed of 4th in British Columbia. The Senior Girls AAA Basketball Provincials will happen from March 1-4 at the Langley Events Centre featuring 16 teams from across BC.

Senior Boys: The senior boys have had an amazing season so far ranking #1 in the province for almost the entire year. the team went into Fraser Valleys as the #1 seed, and have won all of their Fraser Valley games by at least 30 points. The senior boys have their final tonight, and its a pretty good guess that they will go #1 seed into Provincials. The Senior Boys AAAA Basketball Provincials will be held from March 8-11 at the Langley Events Centre featuring teams from all over BC.
